### Chap 16 Data Handling: Activity 1 - Gateway to Singapore Statistics

The Singapore Department of Statistics plays an important role in the growth of Singapore.
It is the central statistical authority responsible for official statistics on the Singapore economy and population.

Do you know...
The
Department of Statistics has begun gathering data for the Census of Population 2010?
• Click HERE to find out how the data will be collected.
• In what way, do you think, the data collected would be useful to the people of Singapore?
Note: This is part of the daily work. All are to attempt.

1. The data collected will let Singaporeans know how many people are there in the various age groups and gender groups. It will also let Singaporeans know that how much has the population change from the previous census and people will be able to predict what type of information we might get for the next census.

2. The data collected can tell Singaporeans about the age, gender, birth rate, etc. in different years. It comes in handy when used for comparison, and prediction.

3. The data collected can allow Singaporeans to know the number of people in age groups, gender groups and other categories like birth rate, etc. It can be used to predict the information we may collect for the next census.

4. The data collected can allow Singaporeans to know about the population statistics like gender, age groups, etc. The information can also be used to predict what the data would be like for the next census when compared to the previous data collected.

5. This data collection is important because it allows the people in Singapore to know their country well. Also, the declination in birth rate can be seen from the data collected. It is Singaporean's responsibilities to know the country well and these data that are collected will be helpful for people from different working industries. For instance, innovators may see opportunities based on the census of population in Singapore.

6. The data collected would be useful in trying to determine Singapore's population, whether it is rising or falling. It is very vital as the government would encourage people to give birth to babies when the population seems to be decreasing rapidly. We can therefore monitor the population of Singapore very carefully as such.

7. The data collected allows Singapore's government to grasp control of Singapore's population. With the data collected, Singapore's government would know what its country is lacking and try to improve the situation.

8. The data collected can show the population size of Singapore and how it is constantly changing so people can do research and know what is happening to cause such changes. This also applies to topics such as employment, economy and housing. It can also be used for reference.

9. The data collected will show if the population of Singapore will increase and will help Singaporeans take action depending on the change in population. For example, if the population of Singapore increases greatly, Singaporeans should try to decrease their consumption rate such as the amount of water they consume or use up.

10. The data that is being collected and plotted into graphs gave the Singapore population a clear glimpse of the whole data trend. This can help us easily show the singapore citizens of the statistical data such as the amount of waste caused year by year. This can make the people be more aware of whats going on in the Singapore Society.

11. The Singaporean population will be able to understand the population of Singaporeans and the changes easily, therefore Singaporeans can understand the demands of the country, and the patterns in population. Showing if there is a decrease or an increase also allows Singaporeans to understand the situation better, for example when the government needs to solve population problems, they can easily get access to information which show trends to quickly find a solution.

12. We need to now the population trend so that we can counter-attack overpopulation or such complications. Besides that, the government can hence, for example, build more buildings as there is more people. Besides that, they can see what the population is like(aging, young etc.) and plan the construction of facilities to cope with that.

13. It would be useful to the people of Singapore as by looking at the chart, we can know what is the population of Singapore, the age, gender, birth rate in different years. We can also know our country well by looking at this chart.

14. The data collected will be useful to the innovators of Singapore. They can create a product according to the population(eg. if there are many people at the age of 50-59, their product should be targeted at them).
Besides that, with the data of people's age, gender, birth rate, etc, the government can make preparations to accommodate to the people of different categories.

15. The data that is being collected and plotted into graphs gave the Singapore population a clear glimpse of the whole data trend. This can show if the population is aging or not. Hence, the Singapore government can work on what will to improve to increase the birth rate.

16. It would be useful for Singaporeans to know clearly about the whole trend of the population of Singapore. The government can see from the data that the population's age gender and birth rate to cope with the situation and try to solve it.

17. the data is needed for Singaporeans to further understand more about Singapore, the population and the economy and welfare of the country.

18. The data collected will allow Singapore to observe its trend, tendency and inclination towards a particular situation. The government will also be able to know what is the current problem and solve it.

19. This data collected will show the population changes and this will help the government to plan and build more facilities to cater to the new generation of people. For example for the past few years, there has been an increase of babies born and it is expected that this rate of increase will go on for a few more years. They also see that more and more parents are going for jobs and to take care of the babies and children, they have to resign from their job. The government will then build more child-care facilities to take care of the babies and children while their parents are at work.
