__Question 1__The median of a set of eight numbers is 4.5.

Given that seven of the numbers are 9, 2, 3, 4, 12, 13 and 1,

find the missing number.

- Arrange the 7 given numbers in ascending order, we get 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 12, 13
- If there are 8 numbers, the median will be the 'number' betwen the 4th & 5th position.
- Since the median is 4.5, it means the number would be greater than 4 (based on the 7 numbers below).
- 4.5 would be the mean of the numbers in the 4th and 5th position
- Since the number in the 4th position is 4, the number in the 5th position would be 5 so that the mean will result 4.5.
- Hence,

__Question 2__The mean of a set of six numbers is 2 and the mean of another set of ten numbers is m.

If the mean of the combined set of sixteen numbers is 7, find the value of m.

- Given that the mean of 6 numbers is 2
- The sum of these 6 numbers would be 6 x 2 = 12
- The mean of another set of 10 numbers is m
- The sum of these 10 numbers would be 10 x m = 10m
- To find the mean of these 16 numbers, we will find the sum of these 16 numbers and then divide by 16
- Sum of these 16 numbers is 12 + 10m
- Also, we are given that the mean of these 16 numbers is 7
- Therefore sum of these 16 numbers is 16 x 7 = 112
- Hence, 12 + 10m = 112
- 10m = 112 - 12
- 10m = 100
- Therefore,

Given that nine numbers are 16, w, 17, 9, x, 2, y, 7 and z have a mean of 11,

find the mean of w, x, y and z.

- Sum of the 9 given numbers is 11 x 9 = 99
- 16 + w + 17 + 9 + x + 2 + y + 7 + z = 99
- w + x + y + z + 51 = 99
- w + x + y + z = 99 - 51
- w + x + y + z = 48
- Therefore

As we can see, in the number sequence: 9, 2, 3, 4, 12, 13 and 1, the middle number is 4. So, in order to allow the median to be 4.5, the number in the middle would be a 5. Any number bigger or smaller will affect the median.
